This electric auxiliary water pump is a 12 V unit with motor and pump combined. It circulates coolant independently of the engine-driven main water pump, e.g. in the circuit for the EGR and turbo, and keeps it moving after the engine is switched off; it is not the engine's main water pump. Typical reasons to replace it: a coolant leak at the pump, the pump not running with a fault code stored, noise, or overheating warnings.
